Our Cashmere is sourced from the Plateaus of Asia. The specialty animal hair fibers are collected during molting seasons when the animals naturally shed their hairs. Goats molt during a several-week period in spring. The down is removed by hand with a comb from the fine, soft undercoat or under layer of hair. One goat yields up to one pound of fiber.
The fiber is extremely warm to protect goats from cold mountain temperatures. Historically, Mongolian cashmere is among the finest.
The Mongolian countryside is filled with small herds of goats and sheep, horses, cattle and camels. Goats, once the least preferable species to a Mongol herder, are milked during the summer and fall and a lot of it is dried and stored for use during the winter. They also supply the only potential source of cash income: cashmere.
